The production of liquid glucose syrup from cassava tubers represents a high-value agro-industrial opportunity in Nigeria, particularly in the South Eastern region where cassava cultivation is widespread and deeply integrated into the local economy. Cassava is the most important root crop in Nigeria and the country remains the largest producer globally, contributing a significant share of global output.
Cassava is widely cultivated across South Eastern states such as Anambra State, Imo State, Abia State, Enugu State, and Ebonyi State, where it serves as both a staple food and a major source of income for rural households. Despite this abundance, most cassava in Nigeria is still processed into low-value traditional foods such as garri and fufu, while its industrial potential remains largely underutilized.
Liquid glucose syrup is a thick, sweet, colorless solution produced through the enzymatic conversion of starch, with cassava starch serving as a highly efficient and cost-effective raw material. The production process involves liquefaction, saccharification, purification, and concentration, resulting in a versatile product used extensively in the food, beverage, confectionery, and pharmaceutical industries.
Globally, the glucose syrup market is valued at over USD 40 billion, driven by increasing demand for processed foods, natural sweeteners, and industrial food ingredients. In Nigeria, demand is also substantial and growing, yet local production remains insufficient, leading to heavy reliance on imports. Current estimates indicate an annual demand of about 60,000 tons of glucose syrup and over 170,000 tonnes of high-fructose syrup, highlighting a significant supply gap that local producers can exploit.
The South Eastern region offers a particularly strong case for investment due to its proximity to raw materials, large consumer markets, and access to industrial hubs. Cities such as Onitsha, Aba, and Enugu are major commercial centers with thriving food processing, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing sectors that require glucose syrup as an input. Establishing production within this region reduces transportation costs, improves supply chain efficiency, and enhances competitiveness.
The proposed project involves setting up a cassava-based liquid glucose syrup plant with a production capacity of approximately 10 tons per day, operating at about 75β80% capacity utilization over 300 working days annually. The process typically follows an input-output ratio where cassava tubers are first converted into starch (approximately 4:1 ratio) and then into glucose syrup (approximately 1:1 ratio), ensuring efficient utilization of raw materials.
The demand for glucose syrup in Nigeria is driven by several key sectors. The food and beverage industry uses it as a sweetener, stabilizer, and thickening agent in products such as soft drinks, confectioneries, baked goods, and ice cream. The pharmaceutical industry uses it in syrups and medicinal formulations, while other industrial applications include adhesives, textiles, and processed foods. The continued growth of these industries, fueled by population growth and urbanization, ensures a stable and expanding market for the product.
From a financial perspective, the business is highly attractive due to the high value addition achieved through processing. Cassava, which is relatively low-cost in raw form, can be transformed into a high-value industrial product, significantly increasing profit margins. The project also benefits from multiple revenue opportunities, including the sale of glucose syrup in bulk (typically packaged in industrial drums) to manufacturers.
In addition to profitability, the project contributes to broader economic development. It supports import substitution, reduces foreign exchange outflows, creates employment opportunities, and strengthens the cassava value chain. It also aligns with government policies promoting agro-industrialization and value addition within the agricultural sector.
The production of liquid glucose syrup from cassava tubers in South Eastern Nigeria is a highly viable, scalable, and strategic investment opportunity. With abundant raw materials, a large and growing market, and significant supply gaps currently filled by imports, the project offers strong potential for profitability while contributing to industrial development and economic diversification in Nigeria.
