The production and export of cashew kernels and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) represent a high-value agribusiness opportunity in South-Eastern Nigeria, driven by strong global demand, Nigeria’s growing position in the cashew value chain, and the significant gap in local processing capacity. Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) is a tropical cash crop with dual commercial value: the edible kernel, which is a premium export commodity, and the shell, from which CNSL—a valuable industrial chemical—is extracted.
Nigeria has emerged as one of the top 10 cashew-producing countries globally, with annual production estimated at about 350,000 metric tonnes in 2024, largely driven by smallholder farmers. Despite this production strength, over 80–85% of raw cashew nuts are exported without processing, resulting in significant loss of potential value addition and export earnings. This presents a major investment opportunity for local processing into kernels and CNSL, which command far higher prices in international markets.
The global cashew market continues to expand, with Africa’s cashew industry valued at approximately USD 856 million in 2024 and projected to exceed USD 1.18 billion by 2033, reflecting steady demand growth. Nigeria itself has seen a surge in export performance, with cashew exports exceeding $398 million in early 2025 alone, indicating strong international demand and favorable pricing trends. Well-managed cashew processing operations are capable of achieving profit margins of 30–40%, especially when integrated with efficient sourcing and quality control systems.
South-Eastern Nigeria—comprising Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States—offers a strategic location for cashew processing and export operations. While the region is not the largest producer compared to states in the Middle Belt and Southwest, it benefits from strong commercial networks, proximity to export routes, availability of labor, and access to major markets such as Onitsha, Aba, and Enugu. These advantages make it an ideal hub for aggregation, processing, and export logistics. Raw cashew nuts can be sourced from producing states and processed within the South-East, where infrastructure and trade activity are more developed.
Cashew kernel production involves shelling, drying, peeling, grading, and packaging of the edible nut. High-quality kernels are exported to markets in Europe, Asia, and North America, where they are used in food processing, snacks, and confectionery industries. In parallel, the shells are processed to extract CNSL, a high-value industrial liquid used in the manufacture of resins, coatings, brake linings, adhesives, paints, and agrochemicals.
The global CNSL market was valued at about USD 415 million in 2024 and is projected to grow at an annual rate of around 8%, driven by increasing demand for bio-based and sustainable industrial materials.
In Nigeria, the CNSL market is also expanding due to its applications in the automotive, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries, as well as its potential as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based chemicals. However, like cashew kernels, CNSL production remains underdeveloped, with limited processing infrastructure and inconsistent quality standards. This creates an opportunity for integrated processing plants that can convert both cashew nuts and shells into export-grade products.
The proposed project involves the establishment of a medium-scale cashew processing facility in South-Eastern Nigeria, capable of processing 10–30 tonnes of raw cashew nuts per day, depending on investment scale. The plant will produce graded cashew kernels for export and extract CNSL from shells, ensuring full utilization of raw materials and maximizing profitability. Operations are expected to run for 300 working days annually, supported by steady raw material supply from producing regions.
The financial viability of the project is strong due to multiple revenue streams, including premium-grade cashew kernels, CNSL, and by-products such as cashew shell cake. Export earnings in foreign currency provide an additional advantage, particularly in the context of exchange rate fluctuations. The business also benefits from Nigeria’s policy support for non-oil exports and agro-processing industries.
Beyond profitability, the project contributes to economic diversification, rural development, and job creation. It supports farmers by creating a stable market for raw cashew nuts, reduces post-harvest losses, and strengthens Nigeria’s position in the global cashew value chain. It also promotes industrialization by encouraging local processing rather than raw material export.
The production and export of cashew kernels and CNSL in South-Eastern Nigeria represent a highly viable and scalable investment opportunity. With strong global demand, abundant raw material supply, and significant gaps in local processing capacity, the project is well-positioned to deliver strong financial returns while contributing to Nigeria’s non-oil export growth and industrial development.
