The establishment of a Used Aluminium Beverage Can (UBC) recycling and aluminium ingot production facility in South-Eastern Nigeria presents a highly lucrative and strategically significant investment opportunity. Aluminium is one of the most valuable recyclable metals in the world due to its high demand, durability, and infinite recyclability.
Recycling UBCs into aluminium ingots not only reduces production costs compared to primary aluminium manufacturing but also addresses environmental challenges associated with metal waste, including landfill congestion and resource depletion.
Aluminium beverage cans are widely used across Nigeria for soft drinks, energy drinks, beer, and other beverages. South-Eastern Nigeria, with its densely populated urban centers, industrial clusters, and vibrant consumer markets, generates substantial volumes of UBCs annually.
Despite this high consumption, a significant proportion of these cans are not recycled effectively, creating a supply gap for high-quality aluminium scrap suitable for industrial processing.
The proposed facility will collect, sort, clean, and process used beverage cans into high-quality aluminium ingots suitable for industrial and commercial use, including manufacturing of new cans, automotive parts, building materials, and other aluminium products. The recycling process involves shredding, melting, refining, and casting into ingots. Modern recycling technology ensures that the final ingots meet international specifications for chemical composition, purity, and mechanical properties.
With a processing capacity of 5β20 tonnes of UBCs per day, the facility can produce approximately 4β18 tonnes of aluminium ingots daily, depending on operational scale and efficiency. The plant will operate 300 working days annually, using state-of-the-art furnaces, casting lines, and quality assurance systems. The final ingots can be sold locally to manufacturers or exported to international markets, taking advantage of high global demand and favorable metal prices.
The economic case for UBC recycling and ingot production is strong. Recycling aluminium consumes only 5% of the energy required to produce primary aluminium from bauxite, offering substantial cost savings and environmental benefits. The business can generate revenue through both local sales to industrial buyers and exports to countries with strong aluminium manufacturing sectors.
Profitability is further enhanced by low input costs, as UBCs are widely available and can be sourced through partnerships with beverage companies, municipal waste collection programs, and informal scrap collectors.
Environmental and social benefits are significant. Recycling aluminium reduces greenhouse gas emissions, decreases energy consumption, and lowers the environmental impact associated with mining and primary aluminium production. The project will also create employment opportunities in collection, sorting, processing, logistics, and administration, supporting local communities and promoting sustainable economic development in South-Eastern Nigeria.
The strategic location of the plant in South-Eastern Nigeria ensures efficient access to major urban centers such as Enugu, Onitsha, Aba, and Awka, facilitating the collection of UBCs and distribution of finished ingots. This region also benefits from a growing industrial base, reliable transport networks, and proximity to ports for export operations.
Establishing a Used Aluminium Beverage Can recycling and aluminium ingot production facility in South-Eastern Nigeria is a financially viable, environmentally responsible, and socially impactful investment. The project leverages strong domestic and international demand for aluminium, reduces environmental waste, generates employment, and contributes to Nigeriaβs circular economy and industrialization objectives.
