Full Fat Soya (FFS) production represents a strategic and high-growth opportunity within Nigeria’s agro-processing and livestock feed industry. Soybean (Glycine max) is a highly valuable oilseed crop known for its rich nutritional composition, containing approximately 38–42% protein and 18–22% oil, making it an ideal raw material for producing high-energy animal feed. In Full Fat Soya production, the whole soybean is processed without oil extraction, thereby retaining its natural oil content and enhancing its energy value for livestock, poultry, and aquaculture feed applications.
Nigeria is currently the largest producer of soybean in sub-Saharan Africa, with annual production estimated at over 1.2 million metric tonnes. Production is concentrated mainly in the Middle Belt states such as Benue, Kaduna, Niger, and Nasarawa. However, consumption is highest in the southern regions, particularly in the South East, where poultry farming, fish farming, and livestock production are expanding rapidly. This geographic imbalance between production and consumption creates a strong business case for establishing a Full Fat Soya processing facility closer to the demand centers in South Eastern Nigeria.
The South East region—comprising Abia State, Anambra State, Ebonyi State, Enugu State, and Imo State—is one of Nigeria’s most commercially active zones, with a strong presence of poultry farms, feed mills, and aquaculture operations. Cities such as Aba, Onitsha, Enugu, and Owerri serve as major consumption and distribution hubs for animal feed products. The region’s high demand for protein-rich feed ingredients, combined with rising costs of imported alternatives, positions Full Fat Soya as a competitive and cost-effective solution.
Full Fat Soya is produced through a process that involves cleaning, drying, and heat-treating soybeans using roasting or extrusion technology. This heat treatment is essential to deactivate anti-nutritional factors such as trypsin inhibitors, making the product safe and highly digestible for animals. The processed soybeans are then milled into meal and packaged for sale. The production technology is relatively simple, and much of the equipment can be sourced locally or imported depending on the scale of operation.
The demand for FFS in Nigeria is driven by the rapid growth of the livestock sector. With a national population exceeding 220 million people, the demand for animal protein—poultry, eggs, fish, and meat—is increasing steadily. Feed accounts for up to 70% of livestock production costs, and protein ingredients such as soybean meal and Full Fat Soya are critical components. The South East, in particular, has a dense concentration of poultry farms and fish hatcheries, creating a consistent and high-volume market for FFS.
The proposed project involves establishing a Full Fat Soya processing plant with an installed capacity of 2–5 tonnes per day, operating at about 70–80% capacity utilization during the initial years. The plant would run a single 8-hour shift for approximately 300 working days annually, with room for expansion as demand grows. Raw soybeans will be sourced from northern production zones and transported to the processing facility, ensuring a steady supply of input materials.
From a financial perspective, the business offers strong profitability potential due to the high demand for feed ingredients and the relatively low processing costs. The ability to produce a high-value product from locally sourced raw materials enhances margins, while proximity to the market reduces transportation costs and improves delivery efficiency. Profitability is further supported by the consistent demand from feed millers, poultry farms, and aquaculture operators.
In addition to financial returns, the project contributes to regional economic development by creating employment opportunities, supporting local feed industries, and reducing dependence on imported protein feed ingredients. It also strengthens the agricultural value chain by linking soybean producers in the North with industrial consumers in the South East.
The establishment of a Full Fat Soya production business in South Eastern Nigeria is a highly viable, scalable, and profitable investment opportunity. With abundant raw material supply, strong and growing demand, and relatively simple production technology, the project is well-positioned to deliver sustainable returns while supporting Nigeria’s food security and agro-industrial development objectives.
